Local Dining

Nearby eateries serve up low-country favorites. Don't miss the chance to try the famous crab cakes and homemade hushpuppies at The Shrimp Shack—a local favorite known for its fresh catch and laid-back atmosphere.

Folly Beach: Laid-back and Full of Character

Just a short drive from Charleston, Folly Beach radiates quirky charm and natural beauty.  A true family-friendly beach town. This is one of the best beach towns, even with being close to Charleston, it has a different feel.

Explore and Relax

  • The Morris Island Lighthouse

Snap breathtaking photos of this iconic lighthouse standing tall against the Atlantic horizon.

  • Surf or Bike

Feeling active? Rent a surfboard or a bike to explore the town’s laid-back, beachy streets.

This vibrant destination is also known for events like the Folly Beach Music Festival and Folly Gras parade, for those craving fun and community spirit.

Awendaw: For Nature Enthusiasts

Nestled north of Charleston or even Kiawha Island, Awendaw is nature at its finest, perfect for outdoor enthusiasts.

  • Birdwatching at Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge

Spot egrets, herons, and countless other species at this lush refuge.

  • Sewee Shell Ring

Explore one of the oldest Native American archaeological sites and imagine life thousands of years ago.

  • Francis Marion National Forest

Take to the trails and immerse yourself in the peaceful wilderness.

This town also thrives on local pride with charming farmers' markets and vibrant community events.  his town is something special, since it is not a beach town, it give you more of who people live. A community feel for the area. You will see roadside stands, baskets hand woven for sale, and other crafts in this grand little town. If you plan your visit at the right time of the year, check out the Blue Crab Festival.

Hilton Head Island: Small Gems in a Big Destination

Hilton Head might be a famous vacation spot, but dig a little deeper, and you'll find less flashy treasures.  You will find pristine beaches, world-class golf courses and plenty of opportunities for water sports.

Hidden Highlights

  • Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge: This quiet refuge is filled with walking trails, birdwatching opportunities, and serene marsh views. Escape the busier beaches and lose yourself in nature’s tranquility.

  • Harbour Town Lighthouse: can be seen as a tourist trap, but I love visiting this place. In fact, I was here for wedding once and it was lovely Pay the $7 to climb the light house

  • Local Bites:  Ditch the tourist traps for small cafés serving up delightful local fare. One of the things I like about visiting here since you are close to the Georgia state Line, so if you are staying a few days, pop over to Savannah Georgia. It will make for a good historic day trip.

Pawleys Island: Relaxation on the Grand Strand

Known as one of the oldest summer resorts on the East Coast, Pawleys Island oozes Old World charm.  Mostly full of rental houses, helping to give it more of the laid-back feel, unlike North Myrtle Beach or Myrtle Beach, that are a good 30 miles or more north of Pawleys Island.

Must-See Spots

  • Brookgreen Gardens: A short drive away, these stunning gardens offer sculptures, flowers, trails, and fascinating history.

  • Huntington Beach State Park: A wonderful place to visit, see alligators and a castle. Have a historic history lesson.

  • Murrells Inlet: Known for some of the best seafood in the state. There is always something about fresh seafood by the sea.

This is part of the Grand Stand of SC, the famous Myrtle Beach area, is the most popular destination on my blog. Which can be crowded, but Pawleys island is the southernmost city which helps with traffic. Other places north, but still not considered too far away from Pawleys Island are Surfside Beach, and Litchfield Beach. I have traveled to Pawleys Island often and have brought my dog in the past. The beautiful beaches that are not near as crowded as other areas of the Grand Strand make it a great summertime vacation spot. But for me the best time to visit is in the off season, it's my favorite to avoid the crowds.

Signature Experience

Visit the historic district of nearby Georgetown, brimming with quaint shops, riverfront views, and excellent seafood options.  I have taken boat tours from Georgetown that are wonderful. If you would like to read a blog about them click here.

Kiawah Island: Where Nature Reigns

Few places feel as pristine and untouched as Kiawah Island, a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. From championship golf courses to walking and biking trails, you have plenty of outdoor things to do that are not on the beach. Also, I should mention if golf is your thing, the Kiawah Island Golf Resort is a great place for those who want easy access to golfing in the area.

Less than an hour from downtown Charleston, you will feel like you are in a different world, compared to the hustle and bustle of Charleston SC. This is more of a luxury island in my opinion.

Don’t Miss

  • Beachwalker Park

This public beach is perfect for peaceful sunsets.

  • Bike Trails

Explore miles of scenic trails and keep an eye out for wildlife, including the elusive bobcat.

Fripp Island: A Serene Neighbor of Beaufort

Though the effort to reach Fripp Island makes it less crowded, it’s well worth the trip.  Once you drive across the bridge, you will realize you are in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Pro Tip: To plan a trip, you must be staying on the island at one of their vacation rentals. Making it feel like you truly belong here among the other vacationers or full-time residents. You can't just say you want to drive through town.

Why Go?

  • Bird Watching

  • Kayaking

Relish unspoiled beaches, bike around the island, or lounge by the water with panoramic views of the Lowcountry landscape.  Perfect for bird watching on the South Carolina coast. This is a the perfect beach for a nature lover. This island has the lowest population of any I have mentioned, a secluded wildlife sanctuary and beach lovers dream.

  • Sullivan’s Island: Near Mount Pleasant and Charleston is great for history buffs. Visit historical Fort Moultrie and take in the peaceful, family-oriented beach vibes.

  • Isle of Palms: Another beach area near Charleston that has some charm and a great beach. Actually, it is located right beside Sullivan's Island. I love looking at the beach homes on this island and dreamed as a child living here.
