The Caribbean islands are often seen as a paradise for travelers seeking sun, sand, and sea. Yet, beyond the well-trodden tourist paths lie hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Whether you're a seasoned cruiser or a luxury traveler looking for unique adventures, these Caribbean treasures are sure to captivate your wanderlust.
Most fellow cruise travelers tend to end up at several destinations in the Caribbean several times. Traveling to the most popular islands like Cozumel Mexico, Nassau and Freeport Bahamas frequently. Even Grand Cayman Islands, St. Thomas and Jamaica are common cruise stops. Most of us look at itineraries to try to find Caribbean cruises that take us to different islands, even though we know a couple port stops will be the most popular locations.
The locations below are perfect for a cruise, especially if you can find a cruise that takes you to the islands. Giving you something different and exotic on your next cruise vacation.

Take a detour to the enchanting island of Bequia in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. This off-the-beaten-path destination offers unspoiled beaches, friendly locals, and a relaxed atmosphere. Explore the island's quaint villages and savor the fresh seafood at local eateries.

Isla Mujeres, Mexico
A short ferry ride from Cancun, Isla Mujeres is a hidden paradise that offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.
Cruise Stop
Isla Mujeres is accessible via smaller cruise lines and private yachts, making it a serene alternative to the bustling Cancun. Most cruise ships stop at the larger cruise port of Cozumel Mexico, and it is about 2 hours away from Cancun, making it even farther to Isla Mujeres. For me this would be perfect if staying in Cancun for a week, but if you would like to rent a boat from Cozumel you could, especially if you have a long time in this port city.
Shore Excursion Ideas
Garrafon Natural Reef Park: Snorkel or kayak in the vibrant waters of Garrafon Natural Reef Park.
Punta Sur: Visit Punta Sur, the southernmost tip of the island, for breathtaking views and a glimpse of ancient Mayan ruins and its rich history.

Placencia, Belize
Escape the crowds and unwind in the laid-back town of Placencia, Belize. Stroll along the charming streets lined with colorful wooden houses or take a boat trip to explore the nearby mangroves and marine life. This hidden paradise is a true gem waiting to be discovered.
Cruise Stop
Not many cruise ships visit here, but some cruise lines like NCL and Carnival visit nearby. The NCL own private island Harvest Caye is not too far away, but still a boat ride away. If visiting Belize City, Placencia is a 3 hour drive each way, so it would not be a great shore excursion. But if you are renting a place for a week and staying while, Placencia is a great place to stay.
Shore Excursions Ideas
Placencia Village: cute little village, known for its laid-back life, great food and drink. Many expats live in the area too. Try the Fry Jacks when wanting food.
Beach: Lounge and swim by the palm tree lined beaches. These beautiful white sand beaches.
Belize City, Belize
You can't have one Belize place without the other on this list. That’s why I put them back-to-back. Larger cruise ships visit this port, but not near as often as some have their own private island in Belize and prefer to visit there instead.
Cruise Stop
Belize City is what I would call a large city, and if you are not used to seeing a large city, via a cruise where there are lots of dogs walking around. You will see it here. I highly recommend taking a shore excursion or booking a reliable 3rd party excursion with a provider like Viator. This port stop would most likely be on a western Caribbean cruise.
Shore Excursions Ideas
The Great Blue Hole: By far one of the best things to visit. This is a very neat water feature only a boat ride away. This is a marine sinkhole, and a popular visit for scuba divers and many other tourists.
Mayan Ruins: Xunantunich is like nothing you have ever seen before. You will learn a lot from this excursion, and usually this style of excursion will include a lunch or snack. This historic site will not disappoint.
Jungle Tour: trek through the jungle safely, while looking for birds, and animals, while experiencing the large tropical forest. On my trip, I saw howler monkeys and were even given the chance to eat termites. They are surprisingly minty, but full of protein. This is how people would stay alive when lost in the jungle eating the Termites.

Vieques, Puerto Rico
Vieques is a hidden gem located off the eastern coast of Puerto Rico, known for its bioluminescent bay and untouched beaches.
Most of the major cruise lines stop in San Juan Puerto Rico, but Vieques is way too far to try to reach from the San Juan cruise port. I personally love San Juan, it's large with many things to see and do like visit old San Juan and its historical sites. But if you do a smaller cruise line to Vieques it is worth it.

I highly recommend St. John in the USVI as over half the island is a national park. It is an easy 1 hour boat ride from St. Thomas where many cruises stop.
I haven't been on a cruise or to the Caribbean so it looks like I can knock off two amazing things off my list in one go with these good ideas. The beaches look stunning, and nice to hear about some less popular places that are typically more overrun
We've always enjoyed the east side of Puerto Rico, both Fajardo and Vieques and Culebra. Vieques is a great addition to your hidden gems list!
