Compared to other islands in the Caribbean Grand Turk is a little island, and part of the British overseas territory of the Turks and Caicos. Originally the first settlers arrived on the island from Bermuda in the 1600’s. The island itself is only 6.9 square miles and has a population less than 5,000 people. Cruise Passengers have been visiting the island and have supported the economy significantly.
Introduction to the Grand Turk Cruise Ship Port
Nestled in the pristine waters of the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Grand Turk Cruise Ship Port serves as a vibrant gateway to the Caribbean. This port, located on the island of Grand Turk, is a hub of activity, welcoming visitors from around the world. Rich in history and cultural significance, Grand Turk has long been a favorite stop for cruise ship vacations.
The port's strategic location makes it an essential part of Caribbean cruise itineraries. Many leading cruise lines, such as Carnival, Princess Cruises, and Holland America, include Grand Turk in their Caribbean cruise destinations. Its unique charm and variety of experiences make it a must-visit for anyone seeking a memorable adventure. I find it nice that not as many cruise ships visit this island. Carnival Cruise Line built this port in 2006, so only Cruise lines who are under the Carnival Corporation travel to Grand Turk. So if you want to plan a visit, make sure it is on the major cruise lines of Princess, Carnival, or Holland America. I did see Virgin Voyages Resilient Lady on the cruise port schedule for a day in November 2024.
The port itself is more than just a docking place; it's an invitation to explore. With its warm hospitality and diverse offerings, Grand Turk Cruise Ship Port promises an experience filled with beauty, excitement, and relaxation.

The port's infrastructure is thoughtfully laid out, providing easy access to all its amenities. Dining options are enticing, with a small selection of restaurants and cafes in case you want to eat here instead of waiting to eat when you get back on the cruise ship.. While in the area check out the whale statue. Did you know that Grand Turk is the perfect place to visit for whale watching in the winter months. Also, there is a NASA Mercury Exhibit. The exhibit is neat. It's cool how Grand Turk played a role in a historic event, the 1962 Mercury Space Mission.
Recreational facilities abound, ensuring entertainment for all ages. Whether you're looking to relax by the pool, ride the flow rider, do some shopping, or swim in the ocean at the cruise center beach area with direct beachfront access with lounger chairs. Top Attractions and Activities for Cruise Visitors
Grand Turk is a paradise for explorers, offering an abundance of attractions and activities that cater to every interest. The island is renowned for its stunning beaches, where crystal-clear waters meet powdery white sand. Governor's Beach, with its serene beauty, is a favorite among visitors seeking relaxation and sunbathing.
History buffs will find joy in exploring the island's rich past. The Grand Turk Lighthouse, standing tall since 1852, offers breathtaking views and a glimpse into the island's maritime heritage. The Turks and Caicos National Museum provides fascinating insights into the island's history, including exhibits on the Molasses Reef Wreck, one of the oldest shipwrecks in the Caribbean.
Columbus Landfall National Park is also located on the island, as this is the first dry ground Christopher Columbus reached on his historic trip to the New World.
For those seeking adventure, water sports are a must-try. Scuba diving and snorkeling reveal vibrant underwater worlds teeming with marine life. Thrill-seekers can also engage in kayaking, paddleboarding, and more.
GIbbs Cay is a tiny very small island off the coast that you can even visit by boat, but is most famous for it being the area's sting ray city. Swimming with sting rays is a once in a lifetime experience. I have done it and loved it.
Among the island's highlights are Margaritaville which is a lively spot with a massive pool, delicious food, and lively entertainment. Perfect for soaking up the island vibes. This is a short walk from the cruise pier, and the pool is the largest pool in the Caribbean. Plus, this is the largest Margaritaville. Rent a Cabana and stay for the day, try out the flow rider if interested in riding the waves, and get a drink at the swim-up bar in the pool.
Jack's Shack, a beloved local bar, offers a more laid-back experience with friendly service and stunning beach views. They have several menu items from conch fritters to jerk chicken, but they also have burgers too. The mixed cocktails like the rum punch or sex on the beach are favorites. These iconic spots add to the island's allure, ensuring that every visitor finds something to cherish.
Beaches of Grand Turk
If beaches are what you are into, then you have come to the right place. There are so many white-sand beaches to choose from. The beach with the softest sand and calmest waters is just to the left from the cruise port and you are there. It is one of the best things to do on the island. It is super close, but there will be more people located here as it is the most talked about beach area as it is near the Cruise Center. Even walking North up to Jack’s Shack it's basically the same beach. If you walk as far as Jacks Shack, the beach is not near as crowded.
Governor's Beach is also North of the Cruise Center at the Port, but you cannot walk the beach to get there. You will need to take a taxi, rent a golf cart, or rental car to get to. It’s about 1 mile away and you should not walk on roads to get there.
On the southern end of Grand Turk there are more secluded beaches. White Sand beach is the farthest out, but also the Boaby Rock Point is a beach area south of the cruise port, but it tends to be rockier.
With a golf cart, car rental or taxi, you can visit other beaches on the island like Pillory Beach, Grace Bay Beach, Palm Grove, East Side Beach, English Point, and so many more.
Tips for Making the Most of Your Visit
To fully enjoy your time at Grand Turk Cruise Port, a little preparation goes a long way. First, consider booking shore excursions in advance. Whether you want to explore historical sites, dive into water sports, or simply relax on the beach, there are guided tours to suit every interest.
Understanding the local customs enhances your experience. The people of Grand Turk are known for their warm hospitality, and a friendly greeting goes a long way. Respect for local traditions and etiquette is always appreciated.
Timing is crucial. The island enjoys a tropical climate, but visiting during the shoulder months of April and November often means fewer crowds and more pleasant weather. Planning your visit during these times can enhance your experience, allowing for more intimate interactions with the island's beauty and culture.
Guide to Planning a Cruise Itinerary that Includes Grand Turk
Incorporating Grand Turk into your Caribbean cruise itinerary opens a world of adventure. Consider starting your journey from popular ports such as Miami or Fort Lauderdale, where numerous cruise lines offer itineraries that include Grand Turk.
A typical itinerary might include stops at other captivating destinations like the Bahamas, St. Thomas, or San Juan. Combining these ports allows for a rich and diverse exploration of the Caribbean, each offering its own unique experiences.
When planning your itinerary, consider the duration of your stay at Grand Turk. A full day provides ample time to explore the port's offerings, enjoy local attractions, and immerse yourself in the island's beauty. With thoughtful planning, your cruise experience becomes a seamless blend of relaxation, exploration, and unforgettable memories.
My Review of the Grand Turk Cruise Port
My favorite thing about Grand Turk is the Beach. On my visit, I took a left when I got the end of the pier and went out to the beach. There are so many lounge chairs set up, you will have no problem finding a spot. The water is the perfect shade of blue, and calm waves. Another thing I enjoyed was the view with the cruise ship in the background. I thought it made for a neat picture.
I was traveling with a group of 10 people on my visit to Grand Turk and we all did different things. I loved the beach and walking down to Jacks Shack for their jerked chicken and drinks. It was not a long walk away from the cruise port, but still enough of a distance away that I knew my mom would not have been able to walk the distance to Jacks Shack. I walked along the beach to Jacks Shack, but if you have knee problems or cannot walk long distances, this will most likely be too far of a walk for you. After leaving Jack’s Shack I just walked back to the cruise ship with a stop along the way, lounging in a beach chair and petting a random dog that came walking by on the beach. There are tons of beach chairs and loungers on the beach north of the pier.
My mom stayed at Margaritaville, swam in the pool and lazy river. She rented a cabana at Margaritaville, which was a little bit pricey, but perfect to get out of the hot Caribbean sun. Plus, the delicious food and drinks delivered to the cabana. She bragged about the fried pickles and cheeseburger. She loved her time there and always wants to pick a cruise where she can go back to Grand Turk because she loved her time there and how it was so close to the end of the port. It made it easy for her knees.
A few people in my group did a tour of the island, stopping at churches, the lighthouse and museum. They also enjoyed the Rum Cake they got at the Rum cake store in Cockburn Town, the city on the island. They enjoyed the tour, and it only took 2.5 hours so they had time to spend on the beach too. They later meet me at Jacks Shack before walking back to the cruise ship.
And lastly 2 people in my group rented a golf cart so they could do whatever they wanted. Drove around the island and checked out some beaches, visited Cockburn Town, and saw the sites. They enjoyed this because the golf cart rental was only $100 on Viator, so it was $50 per person. Cheaper than the shore excursions from the cruise ship that my other friends did when they checked out the island on a tour.
I enjoyed this island, and I would visit again. It is not large or loaded with lots of people. It may not have the views of St Thomas from the hillsides on the island or be busy with all the hustle and bustle of Nassau Bahamas, but for a relaxing beach day where there are not more than 2 ships in port. I think it is a great place to visit, and many other cruise ship passengers agree.

That sounds so nice. Also, I love doing the island tours in general. Like, I thoroughly enjoyed the tour of Hulhumle on my visit to the Maldives.
That all sounds a lot more peaceful and relaxing than my only trip to the Caribbean - Dominican Republic - a long time ago. Thanks for the information.
