Mining Methods
The mine offers three main ways to get your hands dirty (literally):
Creeking

The best spots are in the crater that is on the property. You will see people digging in several places in the crater and anywhere is perfect for a chance to find stones.

You will not need much water to wash away the dirt to see gemstones, hopefully you will find one of rare gemstones like Hiddenite.
Educational Programs
Emerald Hollow mine offers educational programs, but they must be scheduled ahead of time. They have an Earth Science Program which discusses in a fun way the tectonic plate movements which cause the gemstones to form. Of course, this educational program gives students time to dig, sluice, and go into the creek looking for gems.
My Experience at Emerald Hollow Mine
Having heard glowing recommendations, and after watching a show on National Geographic last year about this mine, I thought I would check it out. Yes, this mine was featured as part of series called Cash and Travels. I was excited to know that just a little over an hour from where I live that I could look for gems of many varieties and the Hiddenite stone, that I knew nothing about before watching the TV show.
On my recent trip, I was beyond excited to visit Emerald Hollow Mine. Starting my day with digging in what appeared to be a pit or crater. I was given basic instructions, and I was on my way with my bucket and shovel. Leaving the pit, I came back down to the sluice flume to see what I found while digging in the dirt. I was thrilled to find small and large pieces of quartz crystals. I made several trips back up the hill to get to the digging spot I liked, and every trip back to the sluice to study my treasures. As the day got warmer, by noon it was hot, so I went to the creek to look for gems sparkling in the water.
Honestly this was fun, being in the water was great and helped cool off for the heat of the day. There were many kids and adults in the creeking area, proving it is a great family activity. My family member that went with me preferred this to digging. After about an hour I was done, Moving on to the sluice flume, I uncovered a piece of amethyst that will forever hold a spot on my mantel. My personal highlight? Digging up a tiny green emerald—not just a gemstone, but a fantastic memory I’ll treasure forever.
The staff were super friendly and knowledgeable, offering helpful advice and explaining how to identify different gems. Plus, the surrounding scenery—lush greenery, blue skies, and the sounds of nature—created the perfect backdrop. Time seemed to fly by as I dove into this unique experience. I arrived just as they opened and spent the whole day.
Tips for Visitors
To make the most of your time at Emerald Hollow Mine, here are a few tips I picked up during my visit:
Wear Clothes You Don’t Mind Getting Dirty – Mining is hands-on, and digging through dirt can get messy!
Bring Sun Protection – Whether you’re creeking or digging, you’ll spend a lot of time outdoors. Hats and sunscreen are a must.
Pack Snacks and Water – The adventure can be tiring, so stay hydrated and keep your energy up with some packed snacks. They do have snack machines and drinks on the property but there is not a restaurant. (There is a restaurant 1 mile away, The Yellow Deli).
Tools and Buckets – These can be rented on-site, but feel free to bring your own if you have specific tools you prefer. I brought my own for my trip, a shovel and bucket. I saw a specific item that I was not expecting to see but makes sense. Wheelbarrows!!!! If you have one, it will make it easier to carry from the digging area to sluice as it is about a quarter miles away.
Where to Stay – Hiddenite has charming inns and cozy Airbnb's nearby. If you’re up for more adventure, consider camping in one of the state parks in the area. More hotel options in Statesville NC. Also, there is Hiddenite Family Campground less than 3 miles away.
Don’t Miss Nearby Attractions – Extend your day with a visit to the Hiddenite Arts and Heritage Center or a scenic hike in Lake Norman State Park, located just a short drive away.
