Carnival Sunshine in St Thomas
Carnival Sunshine in St Thomas

Ahoy, travel enthusiasts and cruise lovers! If you're looking for the perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and luxury, look no further than the Carnival Sunshine. This remarkable cruise ship, part of the renowned Carnival Cruise Line, has been making waves in the cruise industry with its top-notch amenities, exciting activities, and unforgettable destinations. In this blog post, we’ll take you on a tour of the Sunshine, highlighting all the features that make it a must-experience for families, solo travelers, and everyone in between. Ready to set sail? Let's dive in!

If you are a first time cruise traveler, you will be very happy with your choice. This is an older ship, but still a great one. I tend to find better deals on this ship than others in the Carnival Fleet. This ship used to be the primary ship that used Charleston South Carolina as its departure point, but with that cruise port discontinuing cruises at the end of 2024, the Sunshine will be moving up the coast to the newly renovated Norfolk Virginia Port as the embarkation and debarkation port. If you are still wanting to travel out of Charleston SC this fall, there is still availability on those cruises.

Some Basic information

  • Guest Capacity- 3002 people

  • Gross Tons- 102,853

  • Length of ship- 892 feet

  • Ships Crew- 1040 people

Luxurious Accommodations

The Carnival Sunshine offers a variety of accommodations designed to suit every traveler's needs. From cozy interior cabins to opulent suites, each room is thoughtfully designed to provide comfort and convenience. The standard cabins are perfect for budget-conscious travelers, offering all the essential amenities in a compact space. For those seeking a bit more luxury, the ocean view and balcony cabins provide stunning sea views and additional space to relax and unwind.

For the ultimate in luxury, the suites on the Sunshine are second to none. These spacious sanctuaries come with exclusive perks such as priority boarding, personalized concierge service, and access to private areas of the ship. Whether you choose a standard cabin or a suite, you can expect top-notch service and a comfortable stay throughout your voyage.

My guest room was a balcony room, and there were 3 in my room. The couch pulled out into a bed and was actually quite comfortable. I traveled with a group of 10 people and 2 of the guest rooms in my party were interior cabins. Even though interior rooms are not as large as a balcony room, I felt they had enough room when I visited my family in those rooms. Usually when I cruise, I get an interior cabin. I like the no light in the cabin, as it gives me the best night of sleep ever, but I can understand why some people prefer to have a balcony or window just for not feeling so closed in.

All rooms have a flat-screen TV, bathroom with shower, and storage areas. Whether you stay in the interior, ocean view, balcony or suite. You will not be disappointed. In my honest opinion go with whatever is best for your budget, whichever you choose you will have a great cruise.

Deck-Level Activities

The Sunshine is packed with activities and entertainment options that cater to all ages and interests. Spread across multiple decks, you'll find everything from water parks and pools to theaters and nightclubs. Deck 10 is home to the famous WaterWorks water park, featuring thrilling slides and kids clubs that are perfect for kids, but adults like the water slides too. Just a few steps away, just on deck 9, you'll find the main pool area, and hot tubs, complete with sun loungers and a poolside bar serving refreshing drinks. This is sometimes referred to as the Pool Deck or the Lido Deck. You will have a great time, people watching near the pool area. When the music is playing, people are dancing and having the time of their lives. I always suggest being on deck when the ship is pulling out of port on embarkation day. It is always a party then, so enjoy drinks from the Red Frog Pub while there. Deck 9, is a perfect place to be on sea days, being lazy soaking up the sun is the best when you are not in port.

If you're looking for some indoor fun, head to Deck 4, where you'll find the Liquid Lounge theater. This state-of-the-art venue hosts dazzling shows and live performances that will leave you in awe. Deck 5 is the place to be for nightlife, with venues like the Limelight Lounge and Havana Bar offering live music, dancing, and signature cocktails. Check out the Alchemy Bar, on deck 5, it's one of my favorites, with interesting drinks. I also enjoy spending time at the bar near the casino, it is perfect to watch people walk by, and sometimes they play Trivia here. Also check out the Piano Bar, you are bound to have a good time there. The shops and the Skybox Sports Bar are also located on this level. The public areas on deck 5 are great on rainy days also.

Deck 11 is the sports zone, with a jogging track to walk or run laps, a basketball court and other sports activities like Ping Pong, a giant chess board and foosball. Check out the ropes course that is nearby too. On the other end of deck 11 is the Serenity area with the Serenity pool and lounge area.

Dining Delights

One of the highlights of any cruise is the dining experience, and the Sunshine does not disappoint. With a wide range of dining options available, there's something to satisfy every palate. The Lido Marketplace on Deck 9 offers a casual buffet-style dining experience with a variety of international cuisines to choose from. Guy’s Burger Joint and the Blue Iguana Cantina are also located poolside on deck 9. For a more formal dining experience, head to the Sunrise or Sunset Dining Rooms on Deck 3, where you can enjoy a multi-course meal in an elegant setting. This is the main dining room, where food options change daily, but there is a basic menu that stays the same on all cruises. For dessert, get the Chocolate Lava Cake. There is a slight dress code for the main dining room. You can't show up in swimwear, so if you are in your swimsuit grab some food on deck 9.

If you're in the mood for something special, the Sunshine offers several specialty dining options that are sure to impress. Specialty restaurants like Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse on Deck 5 serves up mouthwatering steaks and seafood dishes, while Ji Ji Asian Kitchen offers a delectable selection of Asian-inspired cuisine. For a true taste of Italy, Cucina Del Capitano on Deck 11 is the place to be. Don't forget to try the signature dishes at each restaurant – they're sure to be a highlight of your culinary adventure!

Destination Highlights

Caribbean Escapades

The Carnival Sunshine takes you to some of the most beautiful destinations in the Caribbean. Whether you're exploring the white sandy beaches of the Bahamas or the vibrant culture of Bermuda, each stop offers unique experiences that will leave you with lasting memories. In the Bahamas, be sure to visit Nassau, where you can snorkel in crystal-clear waters, explore historic landmarks, and shop for local crafts.

In the Bahamas simply relax on the beach with a refreshing tropical drink or go snorkeling. There are a variety of tours to take on Nassau, Freeport and Bimini Islands in the Bahamas. Each destination on the Sunshine's Caribbean itinerary offers a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure, making it an ideal choice for travelers of all ages.

Bermuda is a different style of laid-back atmosphere. Relax on the beach or take a tour of the island. Sometimes you don't have to choose between one or the other, as the ship docks in Bermuda overnight, so you can try out a different excursion the next day.

Princess Cay, Half Moon Cay, or Celebration Key are typical beach days. These stops are their own private island. These ports offer beaches with beach chairs, with Celebration Key opening in the summer of 2025 with a large ocean front pool area, kids splash zone.

Grand Turk is a fun little island the Carnival fun ship likes to visit. At the end of the pier is a large Margaritaville with food, alcohol, pools and a lazy river. You can rent a Cabana there if interested. (A shore excursion from a cruise ship offers these cabanas too.)  I tend to walk down the beach about a quarter mile to Jack’s Shack, where they have great Jerked Chicken. There are plenty of lounge chairs on the beach along the way between Margaritaville and Jack's Shack.

Overlook at St Thomas
Overlook at St Thomas

St Thomas is one of my favorite cruise ports, and in fact my time on the Sunshine was the time I went to St Thomas. Exploring the port area and market, taking the tram to the top of the mountain to the overlook, or snorkeling are great options. In fact, I took a boat tour from St Thomas once, that gave me the best snorkeling experience closer to the island of St John.

St Maarten is a great island to visit, with great shopping near the port, great beaches, and snorkeling. Take a boat trip like I did and watch the planes land on the island, it is a neat experience as these planes land so close to the beach it looks as if they are going to land in the ocean. Did you know that St. Maarten is split between French and Dutch.

Amber Cove is a cruise port in the Dominican Republic. There is plenty of history nearby, but it is one of the newer cruise ports and may still be lacking in activities at the cruise port. It is best to take a tour/ shore excursion here if you do not want a beach day, as the port itself is lacking compared to St Thomas or St Maarten.

If you are looking for Transatlantic, Mediterranean, or exotic adventures in other parts of the Caribbean like Jamaica, Grand Cayman or Cozumel, you will not find them if you take a cruise on the Sunshine in the near future, or at least for the resort of 2024 and all of 2025.

Family-Friendly Features

Kid-Friendly Amenities

The Carnival Sunshine is a fantastic choice for families, offering a wide range of amenities and activities tailored specifically for kids and teenagers. The onboard WaterWorks water park is a favorite among young travelers, with its thrilling slides and splash zones providing endless hours of fun. The ship also features a dedicated kids' club, Camp Ocean, where children can participate in supervised activities and make new friends.

For teenagers, Club O2 and Circle "C" offer cool hangout spaces and organized events, such as dance parties and movie nights. These clubs provide a safe and fun environment for teens to socialize and enjoy their time on the ship. With so many kid-friendly amenities, parents can relax knowing their children are well-entertained and cared for.

Tips for Parents

To make the most of your family time onboard the Sunshine, consider pre-booking shore excursions and specialty dining experiences. This will ensure you have access to the best activities and dining options during your cruise. Additionally, take advantage of the kids' clubs and babysitting services, which allow parents to enjoy some well-deserved relaxation while their children are engaged in age-appropriate activities.

Be sure to pack essentials such as sunscreen, swimwear, and comfortable clothing for your little ones. With so many activities and amenities available, your family is sure to have an unforgettable vacation aboard the Carnival Sunshine.

Dining and Culinary Experience

Restaurant Reviews

The dining experience on the Carnival Sunshine is a true culinary delight, offering a wide range of options to suit every taste. The Lido Marketplace is a popular choice for casual dining, with its extensive buffet featuring international cuisines and fresh, made-to-order dishes. For a more formal dining experience, the Sunrise Restaurant offers a sophisticated setting and a delicious multi-course menu.

In the Lido Marketplace is the Pizzaria, and Carnival is known for great pizza in my opinion. Be sure to check it out. Another place you should check out even though it is not free is the Shake spot and the Java Blue Cafe, I bought a cake there once and it was amazing.

Specialty dining options on the Sunshine are not to be missed. Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse serves up premium steaks and seafood, while Ji Ji Asian Kitchen offers a tantalizing selection of Asian-inspired dishes. Cucina Del Capitano provides an authentic Italian dining experience, complete with homemade pasta and traditional recipes. Each restaurant on the ship offers a unique dining experience that is sure to please even the most discerning palate.

Signature Dishes

One of the highlights of dining on the Sunshine is the opportunity to try the ship's signature dishes. At Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse, the filet mignon is a must-try, perfectly cooked and seasoned to perfection. Ji Ji Asian Kitchen's Kung Pao Chicken offers a delightful blend of spicy and savory flavors, while Cucina Del Capitano's spaghetti carbonara is a creamy, indulgent treat.

In addition to these signature dishes, the Sunshine also offers themed dining nights and special events, such as a seafood feast or a chef's table experience. These unique dining experiences add an extra layer of excitement to your culinary adventure on the ship.

Themed Nights and Exclusive Menus

The Carnival Sunshine takes dining to the next level with themed nights and exclusive menus that offer a unique and immersive experience. One of the most popular themed nights is the "Elegant Night," where guests are encouraged to dress up and enjoy a sophisticated dining experience. The menu for this special night features gourmet dishes such as lobster tail and prime rib, along with decadent desserts.

Another highlight is the "Chef's Table" experience, where a limited number of guests can enjoy a multi-course meal prepared by the ship's executive chef. This exclusive dining event includes a behind-the-scenes tour of the galley and a chance to interact with the chef. These themed nights and exclusive menus provide an opportunity to indulge in extraordinary culinary experiences that you won't find anywhere else.

My Carnival Cruise Line Reviews.

My Experience on the Sunshine

Having personally sailed on the Carnival Sunshine, I can attest to the incredible experience this ship offers. From the moment I stepped onboard, I was greeted with warm smiles and a welcoming atmosphere. The accommodations were comfortable and well-appointed, providing the perfect retreat after a day of exploring.

One of the highlights of my trip was dining at Ji Ji Asian Kitchen, where the flavors and presentation of the dishes were truly outstanding. The entertainment options on the Sunshine were also top-notch, with the Liquid Lounge theater offering captivating shows that left me in awe. Overall, my experience on Carnival Sunshine was nothing short of fantastic, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable cruise vacation.

One thing that did happen that was shocking, a pipe burst on the ship and flooded a few rooms, including mine. Luckily the carpet in my room was wet only at the door area of my cabin, but other cabins were a lot worse. You can google videos of the flood online. I didn't record a video myself. The Carnival staff placed a floor fan in my room to hep dry my carpet, and in under 24 hours it was fine.

Diverse Perspectives

To provide a well-rounded view of the Carnival Sunshine, it's important to consider the experiences of solo travelers, couples, and multi-generational families. Solo travelers have praised the ship's social atmosphere and the variety of activities that make it easy to meet new people. In summary, the Carnival Sunshine is a cruise ship that truly offers something for everyone, even though it is one of Carnival’s oldest ships. The Sunshine's family-friendly amenities, stunning destinations, and exceptional service make it a top choice for anyone looking to embark on a memorable cruise vacation.
