This blog answers your burning questions about bottled water on NCL, dives into their sustainability efforts, and shares tips to keep you hydrated without compromising your values. Plus "More at Sea" package info.
Is Bottled Water Free on Norwegian Cruise Line?
The short answer? No, bottled water is not free on NCL cruises.
However, fear not! There are other included beverage options to quench your thirst. At the buffet, you’ll find complimentary drinks such as coffee (regular and decaf), iced tea, milk, a few fruit juices and a few flavored water options. There’s even hot water available for you to brew up some relaxing tea. While bottled water might not be on the free list, rest assured, staying refreshed on board doesn’t have to cost extra. Also, it should be mentioned you can get a glass of water at any bar or restaurant on board, from dining rooms to the atrium bar, this is not a problem at all.
Purchase a Flow water package
You can purchase a water carton package. 6- 1 Liter Cartons for $19.95, 12-1 Liter Cartons for $34.99, 24-1 Liter Cartons for $49.99 (a case of water). There are also soda package and Starbucks coffee package options available. (based on if the cruise ship has a Starbucks, not all Norwegian Cruise line ships have them) Soft drinks cost about $5 per can if you order at a bar, so if you drink 2 sodas a day, this might be an option for you at $9.95 per person per day. The soda package includes tonic water, soda, ginger ale and energy drinks. The Starbucks package is $12.95 per person per day. I usually limit myself when cruising to 1 diet coke or sprite once a day due to my reusable water bottle.
There is also the NCL drink package that includes alcoholic drinks, even the premium alcoholic drinks, and specialty drinks, plus other non-alcoholic beverages like soda but not cartons of water or Starbucks. The unlimited open bar package is usually added in as the "More at Sea" package when you book your cruise, this can be less expensive if bought and added in at the time of cruise purchase and might save you a couple dollars. In fact, you will be saying $59 per person per day by buying the "More at Sea" package now, then just buying the beverage package later. The "More at Sea" package monetary value is added on to the total cost of the cruise on the website or by the travel agent. The More at Sea is a great value with all that is included if you can afford it and drink alcohol. While you cannot buy the "More at Sea" package on Board you can purchase the drink package onboard for a cost of $89 per person per day (plus taxes and fees) as long as you purchase it within the first 2 days of a 7-day cruise.
What's included in "More at Sea"
These sea perks can only be added on to cruises that are 3 days long or longer.
Discounts on NCL sponsored shore excursions. ($50 off each excursion) This is for every port stop. Some people say its free shore excursions, but it is not. If your shore excursion is only $50 then it is free, but the majority of the shore excursions provided are more than $50, so you will only get $50 off the shore excursion. This also only applies to the first person in cabin.
Basic Wi-Fi package-150 minutes for a 7-night cruise or longer. 3-to-6-night cruises get 75 minutes. This is high speed internet access with Starlight. Be sure to sign out on your cell phone when not in use, as the 150 minutes flies by quick. It will continue to be connected unless you sign in and sign out with every use. Unlimited access to wi-fi can be added on to your cruise, and from personal experience works great. on the old program it only covered one person in the cabin, now it covers everyone is the cabin.
Specialty Restaurants- There are a variety of specialty restaurants onboard and if you have a balcony room you get 3 specialty restaurants, if you book a solo studio cabin, inside or ocean view cabin you get 1 specialty restaurant with the "More at Sea" package on a 7-day cruise. The longer cruise the more specialty restaurants included in the "More at Sea". I highly recommend Le Bistro, Cagney's and Moderno that are on some of the NCL ships. When buying this as part of the More at Sea Package you are paying $20 per meal per person. This is a great price, as you would be paying ala carte if you go to these specialty restaurants with out the package. I have paid ala carte before and it can be expensive (2 people for steak and dessert at Cagney's was $144, but it was so worth it). Kids under 18 are not charged with the "More at Sea" package.
Premium drink package- alcohol, and non-alcoholic beverages, but still does not cover water cartons or specialty coffee beverages from Starbucks. The old program covered drinks up to $15, now it covers more premium drinks. Here is the list of popular premium liquor brands that are included now: Grey Goose Vodka, Citadelle Gin, Mount Gay Rum, Casamigos Blanco Tequilla, Bullet Rye, and Wild Turkey 81 Bourbon, Espadin Mezcal, and Suntory Toki Japanese Whiskey.
Also included as an extra perk if it works for what you are booking, Airfare for second guest in a cabin, and 3rd and 4th guest on cruise is free
Pro Tip: the NCL beverage package extends to the private island, Great Stirrup Cay, so drink as much alcohol as you want.
You cannot purchase the alcohol package after the cruise starts. Just remember the second guest in room must also purchase the more at sea offer, it is not for just first guest in the cabin. Pro tip: Mini bar purchases are not included in the "More at Sea", and room service will check the mini bar, refill and charge your account accordingly. Your account is paid for by the credit card you place on file during the precheck process. Wine is included in the alcohol package but not bottles of wine. You can bring 1 bottle of Wine or Champagne onboard for a corking fee. $15 for a 750ml bottle of wine or $30 for a 1500 ml magnum bottle. You can drink those wine bottles in your room or at a restaurant.
Pride of America cruise ship is a little bit different with the Hawaii beverage package is different, but it makes sense the ship itself is different. Did you know the Pride of America does not have a casino? It's true. Pride of America cruises typically cruise around Hawaii most of the time. So, it might have something to do with never truly being out in international waters as all the port of call are in Hawaii.
Water in Your Cabin
What about the water in your room? Here's the good news—it’s completely safe to drink! Thanks to advanced filtration systems onboard, the water from your sink is fresh, clean, and suitable for hydration. Pair this with a reusable bottle or thermos, and you’re good to go without adding to your onboard expenses. I always pack my reusable bottle, I fill it up with coffee in the mornings in the buffet, and then Later in my room I fill it up in my bathroom and add crystal light. (This is how I save money on a cruise by not purchasing extra water cartons, coffee, or soda.) You will also see one carton of Flow in your cabin when you arrive onboard, if you are not a gold status member with NCL this will be treated as a mini bar purchase if you drink it.
The Sustainability Challenge
The bottled water question ties into a larger, more critical issue—the environmental impact of single-use plastics. With millions of plastic bottles discarded worldwide, it’s clear that we face a growing plastic waste crisis. For cruise lines, the challenge becomes even more pressing as their operations interact directly with our delicate marine ecosystems.
Norwegian Cruise Line has stepped up to make waves in the fight against plastic waste. Their "Sail & Sustain" program demonstrates a significant commitment to reducing plastic waste, setting an example for the industry.
Why Should This Matter?
Cruising the high seas is a dream come true but imagine your dream vacation contributing to the ocean’s pollution problem. From the gorgeous turquoise waters of the Caribbean to the icy landscapes of Alaska, these destinations deserve our respect and protection.
The Bottled Water Dilemma
Historically, serving bottled water onboard has been a convenient way for cruise lines to cater to passengers. However, single-use plastics don’t align with today’s heightened environmental awareness.
Reusable Options for Water Aboard NCL
NCL ships recognizes this dilemma and encourages passengers to adopt more sustainable practices. One simple solution? Bring your own refillable bottle or mug. With filtered water stations across the ship, it’s easy to refill as you explore the decks or enjoy entertainment onboard.
Not only does using a refillable bottle help save the oceans, but it also sidesteps the extra charge for bottled water. Trust us—your wallet and the planet will thank you.
NCL's Response
Norwegian Cruise Line has risen to the occasion by launching proactive initiatives through their Sail & Sustain program. Here’s a snapshot of what they’re doing to reduce their environmental footprint:
Eliminating single-use plastic straws, water bottles, and cutlery.
Offering reusable beverage options for passengers.
Partnering with organizations to protect and restore marine ecosystems.
When it comes to bottled water, NCL has swapped out traditional plastic bottles for eco-friendly cartons. These small but meaningful steps reflect their commitment to sustainability while ensuring passenger convenience.
Loyalty Perks for Bottled Water
For NCL’s frequent cruisers, there’s good news. Passengers at higher loyalty levels can enjoy complimentary water cartons in their room. Here’s the breakdown:
Gold and Platinum members receive 1 free water carton.
Sapphire, Diamond, and Ambassador members get 2 complimentary water cartons.
If you're a returning customer moving up the loyalty ladder, this perk might just add a few extra smiles to your cruise experience. If you are not sure what your loyalty # is, ask a travel agent like me to look it up for you. Who knows, you might have a good deal on a cruise, just from your loyalty #, some of the best value cruises happen to past NCL guests.
Guest Experiences & Tips to Stay Hydrated
Passengers have shared a mix of experiences regarding bottled water on NCL. Some enjoy the refill stations and appreciate the company’s eco-friendly angle, while others miss the convenience of having unlimited bottled water.
If you’re planning your trip, here are some tips to keep hydration simple and sustainable on board:
Bring a reusable water bottle: Lightweight, insulated models are a great choice for both hot and cold drinks.
Take advantage of refill stations: They’re conveniently located around the ship.
Prepare for excursions: Fill up your bottle before heading out for excursions to avoid buying bottled water shoreside.
These small changes can make a big difference as you contribute to an eco-friendlier cruising experience while staying hydrated!
I personally love using my refillable cup. I always make sure to pack it. Its great to use when you go to the buffet and fill it up with whatever I'm in the mood for. Start out the day with Coffee than later fill it up with water from either the buffet area or in my room.
Every cruise line from MSC cruises to Royal Caribbean have different ideas on water bottle, or even the alcohol packages. Always double check with the cruise line you choose as thing vary on each cruise line. Did you know that Virgin cruise line, which is considered to be the most sustainable and environmentally friendly, does not have a an alcohol package. Purchasing alcohol on Virgin is like opening up a bar tab, where sometimes you get a few free drinks with a purchase of a cruise.
The Future of Sustainable Cruising
What NCL is doing is impressive, but it’s just the start. The cruise industry as a whole needs to take even bolder steps, such as investing in alternative materials and renewable energy sources to reduce overall waste and emissions.
As passengers, we can play our part too. Each choice—whether it’s bringing our own bottles or supporting companies with sustainable initiatives—helps shape the future of travel.
With their ongoing commitment to sustainability, NCL sets a standard that encourages other cruise lines to follow suit. From reducing onboard waste to expanding sustainable tourism partnerships, their next steps could impact the entire industry.
The bottled water debate on Norwegian Cruise Line is about more than what’s included in your package—it’s a reflection of a broader shift toward responsible travel. By understanding policies like these, we become better-informed travelers and make choices that positively impact the planet.
Whether you’re enjoying your vacation on a breathtaking fjord or revisiting your loyalty perks, remember that small actions add up. Bring that refillable bottle, savor filtered water, and sip on sustainability. Cheers to a better way to cruise!
