Pipestem Resort State Park is not only a haven for nature lovers but also a place steeped in history. Established in the late 1960s, the park was developed to boost tourism and preserve the natural beauty of the Appalachian region. Named after the indigenous pipestem plant, known to be used to make tobacco pipes, the park has grown to become a beloved destination for both locals and visitors from afar. The area was originally home to Native American tribes and later became a site for early settlers in West Virginia.

The park's development was part of a statewide initiative to create recreational spaces that highlight the state's natural assets. It's fascinating to see how the park has evolved, with its rich tapestry of stories woven into every trail and landmark.

My Time at Pipestem Resort State Park

Having visited Pipestem Resort State Park myself many times, I can attest to its allure as one of West Virginia's finest destinations. The park's diverse attractions and tranquil atmosphere make it my favorite state park in the area. Whether hiking through the woods or savoring a sunset from the lodge, each moment spent here is a treasure.

One of my fondest memories is taking the aerial tramway for the first time. The sweeping views of the gorge below were breathtaking, and it was a thrilling way to begin my adventure. Exploring the park's trails further deepened my appreciation for its natural beauty and the care taken to preserve it.

One of my best experiences is a memory of riding the tram to the Mountain Creek Dining Room before my high school prom. Many of us went there before the prom, for this special occasion. Not many people can say they rode an aerial tram in a prom dress. Lol

I camped in a tent in the campgrounds as a child on a girl scout trip. Visited many times to swim in the pool. Played golf with my grandfather on the 9-hole short course. Learned how to ride a horse in a class at the stable. Visited the Nature center to learn, and took classes to learn about flowers, bees and many other things over the year.

Not to mention the countless deer, and turkeys I have seen on my visits. I have never seen a black bears but I know they are around. I am very lucky to have this State Park less than 30 minutes from my childhood home. Growing up with it so close made me become a nature lover, and learn so much about the outdoors, making it my favorite State Park in West Virginia.

Every visit to Pipestem brings new experiences and discoveries. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, this park offers endless opportunities for exploration and connection with nature.
